What to do if you chip or break a tooth…
If you fracture a tooth, rinse with warm water and apply an ice pack or cold compress to reduce swelling. Take ibuprofen for pain (avoid if asthmatic, pregnant, or sensitive to it).
Minor chips can be smoothed by your dentist, while larger fractures may need a filling, crown, or inlay.
If a denture tooth breaks or chips, wear your spare set until you can visit us.
What to do if your tooth is knocked out…
Losing a tooth can be traumatic, but try to stay calm. Call us immediately and book an emergency appointment. Seeing your dentist within an hour gives the tooth the best chance of survival.
Handle the tooth by the crown (the visible part), not the root, as touching the root can damage important cells.
Rinse the tooth gently under cold water for ten seconds—don’t scrub. To prevent it from drying out, place it between your cheek and gum (not for young children—in that case, use milk).

Frequently Asked Questions About Emergency Appointment at The Academy Dental
What should I expect at an emergency appointment?
After being greeted by our attentive front-of-house team, you will be swiftly assessed to determine the cause of your discomfort.
The assessment may include x-rays being taken and a few special tests are done at a pace that suits you. Your emergency appointment is given the same level of attention to detail as routine appointments, and your comfort level is always at the forefront of our mind.
Will my treatment be completed on the same day?
Our experienced dentists always aim to provide emergency treatment on the same day.
On rare occasions, this is not possible, i.e. seriously high levels of infection, sedation required, and referral to a more advanced clinician/specialist is needed.
