Nervous dental patients in Shepperton

Most people feel a little apprehensive before visiting the dentist. Some people however have a real fear.

There are many reasons why patients might have a dental anxiety or dental phobia. These include:

  • A bad experience that happened previously at the dentist
  • A fear of needles, injections or pain
  • A feeling of not being in control
  • Feelings of claustrophobia

Having a dental anxiety or a dental phobia is serious because it not only affects your mental well-being, but it can impact your oral health.

Dental phobias can lead to a cycle whereby you don’t visit the dentist because you are frightened, which means not having dental treatment you need, which leads to potentially pain and more complex dental problems. Untreated dental work can result in more expensive treatment being needed too.

Helping nervous dental patients in Shepperton

At Shepperton Dental, we understand how upsetting a dental anxiety, or a dental phobia can be. Our team are all very caring and have great experience in helping nervous dental patients from Chertsey, Walton-on-Thames, Littleton, Upper Halliford, Lower Halliford, Shepperton and throughout Surrey.

We use several techniques to help overcome your dental fear which include letting you visit the dental practice, talking through your concerns, openly communicating with you and adjusting your treatment where necessary. We will always listen to you and move at your pace.

What is dental sedation?

If you are feeling very distressed, we can offer dental sedation. We will need to make sure that you are suitable for sedation first.

Conscious dental sedation involves administering a drug by a qualified professional seditionist. You will experience a feeling of complete relaxation. Whilst you remain awake, you will feel almost in a dreamlike state and relaxed enough to have the dental treatment you need. Once completed, you probably won’t remember much about the treatment at all.

Conscious dental sedation is safe, but it will mean that you feel sleepy for the rest of the day, so you need another person to take you home and look after you.
